Play retro video games on a dedicated handheld device, and don't cheat
My Anbernic - taken by Daniel Cerkez

About two years ago, I found a YouTube channel called Retro Game Corps and it blew my mind. Until then, I did not know that there were so many cool handheld gaming devices on the market. There are a ton of them. They range from costing $30 to over $1000, and from being capable of playing games from retro game consoles, like Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genisis, and Nintendo Gameboy, up to modern games. As a kid, I loved playing games on my Nintendo GameBoy Advance SP and Sony PlayStation Portable, so I was a pretty easy target for this market. About a year after discovering this world, I decided to join in on the fun, and bought myself the Anbernic RG 40XXV. It's a pretty entry level device, capable of playing games up to the level of Sony PlayStation and Nintendo DS. The idea was to get something cheap, because I wasn't sure how much I would be able to play it and if I would even really like it.

I have had it for about a year now, have been playing on it pretty consistently, and have really been enjoying it. I decided to slowly play through the most highly rated, and interesting games to me, of all of the old consoles, starting with Nintendo Entertainment System. I have discovered a lot of great games hat I have never heard of before this way, and with each newer console, the games have only been getting better. I am currently playing The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. It's pretty great.

Right now my life is pretty busy, so being able to just pick up my Anbernic and instantly resume playing a game, whenever I have a little bit of time for it at the end of the day, has been a great fit for me. If you are into video games, and are having trouble finding time in your day for them, I think one of these dedicated handheld gaming devices could be a great fit for you too. I also find the added benifit of gaming on a dedicated handheld device, as opposed to on your phone or computer, to be that you cannot easily multitask, or constantly switch back and fourth between other tasks, so you are less distracted.

From my limited experience playing retro games so far, I can definitely say that I would recommend that every gamer check them out and play them. Games on really old systmes, like Nintendo Entertainment System, often only have one difficulty level, so they will definitely humble you and test your patience, if you think that you are good at video games. Many retro games have amazing story lines, beautiful graphics, and amazing art. When playing them, I find the experience to be similar to reading a book, in that it is like an escape to another world. Finally, if you do check out and play some retro video games, don't cheat. There are a ton of guides and cheat codes to be used, but I have found that being confused and lost in a game is part of the experience and adds overall value to it.
