Why did we stop drawing? I'm going to start again.
I have been watching my son draw since he was about two years old. He started when he could barely even hold a pencil, and, after a couple of years of sitting down to draw or colour here and there, he has improved to being able to draw whatever he can think of and it being pretty clear as to what it is.
While watching him, I realized that this is something that I, and most other people, did as a child all the time. As a child, you would draw when you were bored, or if you wanted to draw something for someone. Drawing was a big part of kindergarten, school, and everyday life as a child. As you get older though, it usually stops being a part of your life at all. I am in my thirties, and I can only think of art class in highschool, as being the last time that I sat down to draw anything, or do art for the sake of just doing art. Unless you are one of the rare people who keeps perusing it on the side, drawing and art is quickly forgotten by most people, as an activity that they could do any time and work on as a skill.
After thinking about this and remembering how much I enjoyed art class in highschool, I decided to incorporate drawing and doing art back into my life, by adding it to the daily habits that I try to do every day. Even if it is only for 5 minutes. I have been doing so for about a month now, and it has been great. It is a habit that I am definitely going to keep around.
Give it a try too. Work on a random sketch everyday. Use the activity to "shut off" for a little bit, relieve some stress, and be creative. You don't have to be good at it, and you don't have to show anyone. Do it for yourself.
Don't be afraid to look into the things for yourself, have your own thoughts, and establish your own stance and opinions. Be the curious sheep of the flock.
